The facts
Sleeplessness in menopause
Sleep problems in menopause include night sweats, insomnia, stress and anxiety, restless leg syndrome, itching and crawling skin, difficulty falling and staying asleep, and waking early.
61%
of women experience hot flushes or night sweats.⁽¹⁾
26%
have severe hot flushes that continue longer than 5 years. ⁽²⁾
Why is this happening?
A decline in the hormone estrogen causes hot flushes and night sweats, as well as joint pain, anxiety, and more frequent urination. Lowering progesterone levels also affect the body’s production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.⁽³⁾
